Mt Rushmore ~ South Dakota USA 2000
Presented as part of the group exhibition "Surfaces" in Brick5 Vienna 2007 <br><br> Framed digital C print 55 x 75cm <br><br> During a 4000 mile road trip through the USA, finding ourselves in South Dakota, we paid an obligatory visit to Mt Rushmore. After leaving this "tourist attraction" we headed deeper into the Black Hills National Forest. Along the road toward Horse Thief Lake, I couldn't help but notice an unusual view of this famous monument. It was only after developing the film several weeks later that, whilst looking through the magnifying loupe to select a frame for enlargement, I was (not) surprised to see another "face" in the landscape. Immediately above the profile of George Washington is what appears to me as a much older, wiser although somewhat disgruntled ancient ancestors face. Perhaps not impressed with what has taken place here in the past, particularly on the "face" of this, his mountain.
